The Auxiliary Police Program is a great opportunity for private citizens to promote public safety through their own personal participation. The Auxiliary Police Program continues to be an invaluable resource to our Department and communities, as they perform uniform patrols as an effective crime deterrent. Their patrol presence and keen observation and reporting of incidents requiring police response, as well as interaction with the public, aides in crime reduction and enhances police-community relations. Another important function of Auxiliary Police Program is serving as a citizen ready reserve in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.
How To Join
Come in person to the 105th Precinct Stationhouse and speak to the Auxiliary Police Coordinator or an Auxiliary Police Supervisor, or call at (718)776-9268, the office is usually not open till later in the day around 6PM but, you can leave a message. Lastly, you can email our unit at: membership@105aux.com.
Requirements
As stated in the Auxiliary Police Patrol Guide, the requirements to join the Auxiliary Police Program include:
- Candidates should be between the ages 17 and 60 (candidates over 60 may apply for limited duties)
- Live or work in New York City
- Be in good health
- Be able to read and write English
- Never been convicted of a felony or have been arrested for a serious crime that would prevent acceptance.
- Be a U.S. citizen or a person who has a valid visa or alien registration card.
You will need the following items when applying for the position of Auxiliary Police Officer:
- Driver License or State ID
- Social Security Card
- 4 passport 2″ x 2″ photos
- If U.S. born: Passport and/or birth certificate
- If foreign born: Naturalization cert., Alien card or U.S. Passport
- Utility Bill (Electric, Gas, Home Phone, Cable or Bank Statement) No cell phone bills
- If utility bill is not in your name, have the person write a letter stating that you live with him/her at said address. Then have the person get the letter notarized.
- If you were ever arrested or issued a Criminal Court Summons, you must first contact Auxiliary Police Coordinator.
Duties and Responsibilities
Auxiliary Police are the “eyes And ears” for the Police Department. They are trained to observe and report conditions requiring the service of regular police officers. Wherever possible, they assist in non-enforcement and non-hazardous duties.
Additional uniform presence at: parks, playgrounds, pools, street fairs, flea markets, block parties, shopping areas, subway entrances and exits, school/church crossings.
Assist with vehicular pedestrian traffic at: parades, marathons, concerts, intersections with broken traffic lights, accident scenes, fire scenes.
Assist in Precinct Identification Programs: Combat Auto Theft Program, Bicycle ID Program, Operation ID Program, Kid Care Program, VIN Etching Program.
Training
Auxiliary Police Officer Recruits must take a training course that meets once a week for 16-18 weeks. This course is like a mini-police academy. Topics include basic penal laws, police science, nightstick training, hand-to-hand combat, and hand-cuffing techniques. You must pass a multiple choice exam, nightstick usage, and a hand-hand combat test.
After successfully completing the Academy Training at the Patrol Borough, Auxiliary Police Officers will be given the chance to pick a night in which they must report every week at their local commands, which would be the 105th Precinct.
You will be required to pick a day during the week when you will cover patrol with other Auxiliary Police Officers either doing a foot post or patrol in an RMP. The mininum commitment the 105th Unit asks of you is 5-6 hours.
After a 6-month probationary period, you will have the chance to go to specialized training for different units and to learn different Police tactics, after 3-5 years with the program and positive reviews from our Coordinator, you can join the Highway Unit, Harbor or even our Auxiliary Patrol Support Unit.
